Chapter 12

Sebastian Dupre

I had to take these hits like the man I thought I was. Taking a long sip from the bottle of tequila, I wasn’t going to get through to her any time soon. Especially, not after the damage she’d cause to the wall in the kitchen and my things. Almost four years ago I married my best friend, who proudly stood by me and dealt with me while I got myself together. She held onto me so tight when life threw us lemons. The only thing that was required of me was to be faithful to her, that I could never do. I promised knowing inside that I would probably fail her. I failed her, and I failed to acknowledge the pain that she wore over her face like clothing. She picked up on my stench of unfaithfulness weeks ago, all I did was take the lid off the trash can to expose it.

It was well into the early hours of the morning, by now she would’ve been getting ready to go come down the stairs, make my breakfast and send me on my way. What was supposed to be the most exciting week of her life was now overshadowed by my infidelity. Dozing off for a while I was woken up by her heels traveling down the stairs.

She wore a white off the shoulder dress, the one I loved to see her in. The one that hugged every curve on her body, the one I watched her wiggle in just to take off. Walking past the living room, she didn’t even glance my way. I looked hard enough to recognize the heavy makeup she did perfectly to mask her days of mourning our marriage.

“Asha,” I started feeling the liquor stagger me slightly as I stood to my feet. “Let me talk to you.”

“You stink,” she gnashed conveying her anger that was harbored deep down against me. “You still smell like that bitch.” She whipped me with her tongue while collecting her things. “If you leave tonight, do not bother returning.”

Her warning was louder than her tone — the intent of hateful motive coursed through her body. Her energy shifted the room. I woke up a monster. Attempting to catch up with her she continued to ignore me. Grabbing her keys and walking out the door as though I didn’t need to look in her face. Speeding off down the street, she left me standing on the sidewalk looking like a fool.

I swore it was only going to be one time. I was never going to touch Alexia again after that once. But she made me forget about my responsibility to my family, to my wife and to myself. She made me feel like the Sebastian Dupre who was still playing college ball and was the best thing the coaches saw coming out of New Orleans. My wife was never supposed to know about my indiscretions. I never had any intention of hurting her like this. I could hear my phone go off in the background, knowing exactly who it was, I ignored it.
